Author Interview – Harriet Hodgson

What is your greatest strength as a writer? I think it is style and write as if I was sitting at the kitchen table sipping coffee with the reader.

Have you ever had writer’s block? Personally, I don’t believe in writer’s block. I think writers get tired, need to take a break, stretch a bit, eat something, and return to the job. Thankfully, my mind makes corrections in my sleep and I wake up in the morning with a message such as, “Paragraph two on page 35 isn’t clear.”

Can you share a little of your current work with us? My latest book is Walking Woman: Step-by-Step to a Healthier Heart. In many respects, I wrote it for myself. I have a heart murmur, a souvenir of childhood Scarlet Fever, and high blood pressure. To reduce the burden on my heart, my doctor asked me to lose weight. I started a walking program, lost about 25 pounds, and maintained this weight until tragedy struck. Like many women, I gained the weight back. But I took action, jump-started my walking program, and am at a healthy weight today. Walking Woman is for those who are at risk for heart disease like me, have had a heart attack, are living with heart disease, recovering from surgery, or just want to be fit.

How did you come up with the title? I wanted a title that “said it all” and was alliterative.

Who is your publisher? Despite a long track record as a published author, in this sagging economy I couldn’t find a “normal” publisher. The publishing industry seems to be stalled, so I self-published the book with Amazon. Walking Woman is a print on demand book – the wave of the future.
